The short answer is yes, they can be used together, and the mechanistic reasoning for doing so is sound even though direct combination study data does not exist. What Each Compound Does
Before addressing whether the combination makes sense, it is worth being precise about what each compound actually does, because the superficial similarity (both relate to vascular support) can obscure a meaningful mechanistic distinction. Minoxidil's best-characterised molecular action is opening ATP-sensitive potassium channels. 2dDR's primary mechanism is pro-angiogenic via VEGF upregulation, established through wound healing research by Dikici et al. (2020) and others. The compound appears to act on VEGF expression through a cellular pathway that is distinct from minoxidil's potassium channel mechanism; 2dDR does not open potassium channels, and it does not have minoxidil's anagen-prolonging properties. Its action is specifically on promoting new blood vessel formation through VEGF upregulation, with no known effect on the hair cycle directly.
The VEGF Overlap: Redundant or Additive?
The natural concern with combining two compounds that both relate to VEGF is whether you're paying for overlap. If minoxidil is already increasing VEGF in the follicular environment, does adding 2dDR provide any further benefit, or does the pathway simply saturate?
The honest answer is that no combination-specific data exists to answer this directly. What the mechanistic picture suggests is that the two compounds reach VEGF via genuinely different cellular routes: minoxidil's VEGF upregulation appears to be secondary to its potassium channel activity in dermal papilla cells, while 2dDR's VEGF upregulation appears to act through a different cellular pathway in endothelial and stromal cells. There is also the question of what minoxidil's VEGF effect actually achieves relative to what 2dDR's does. Why the Combination Is Mechanistically Rational

A common approach is minoxidil in the morning and 2dDR in the evening, or vice versa. This avoids any uncertainty about whether one affects the absorption or stability of the other when they are mixed on the skin surface, and it gives each compound a window of contact with the scalp before the next wash or product application.
Topical minoxidil solutions typically contain propylene glycol as a carrier solvent and ethanol. Minoxidil foams generally contain no propylene glycol.
