GHK-Cu 1% Serums: What Separates a Transparent Formula from a Marketing Claim

The "1%" label has become standard language in the GHK-Cu serum market. Some products state it explicitly. Others imply it through category association. In a significant number of cases, GHK-Cu is present in a multi-ingredient formula where the actual copper peptide concentration is a fraction of what the product name suggests. For a buyer who has read the research and is looking for a formulation that reflects it, this distinction matters.
This article sets out five criteria for evaluating a GHK-Cu serum. They are not proprietary standards: they follow directly from what the research literature uses, and from what the UK cosmetic regulatory framework requires. Apply them to any product, including this one.
The first question is whether the brand states the active concentration explicitly: 1%, or equivalently 10mg/mL. Not "copper peptide serum" or "high-concentration formula" but a specific number the buyer can evaluate against the research.
Research on GHK-Cu spans a range of model systems, including in vitro skin penetration studies, gene expression panels, and subcutaneous animal research, each using its own concentration or dose format. None of this research directly validates 1% as a specific in-use topical concentration, and no brand can honestly claim otherwise. What a stated concentration does allow is scrutiny: a buyer can weigh a known figure against what the literature actually measured, model system by model system. A product that cannot or will not state a specific concentration forecloses that scrutiny entirely. If a brand avoids the question, that is itself informative.
There is a second layer to this question that is almost never addressed directly: 1% of what, exactly? Copper peptide suppliers sell GHK-Cu in multiple forms, including pure powder and pre-dissolved stock solutions of varying concentrations. A formulator using a stock solution at 1% inclusion in the final formula is not producing a 1% GHK-Cu serum in the same sense as a formulator adding 1% pure Copper Tripeptide-1 powder by weight. The actual active concentration in the former case depends on the concentration of the stock solution, which the finished product label does not disclose.
What this means in practice
Without a brand explicitly clarifying that their stated percentage refers to pure Copper Tripeptide-1 by weight, a "1% GHK-Cu serum" claim is ambiguous. The most reliable confirmation is a combination of stated concentration and mg/mL equivalent: 1% and 10mg/mL refer to the same thing and together leave no room for interpretation.
INCI ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration for ingredients present above 1%. Below 1%, any order is permitted by regulation. This creates a useful diagnostic: if Copper Tripeptide-1 appears near the bottom of a long ingredients list, after the preservative system, after a range of botanical extracts or functional agents, the concentration is likely below 1% and potentially substantially lower.
A product that leads with copper peptide marketing, then lists Copper Tripeptide-1 as the penultimate ingredient, is more likely offering a trace inclusion at a marketing-friendly label position than a research-referenced dose. What to look for
In a typical aqueous 1% GHK-Cu serum, Copper Tripeptide-1 should appear after water and the primary humectants, and before the preservative system. If it appears after the preservatives, the concentration is likely below the preservative level and may be considerably lower.
A standalone GHK-Cu serum has one primary active. The carrier system, the pH, the preservative choice, are all optimised for that compound. In a multi-peptide blend, multiple actives are present and a "1%" figure in the product name does not necessarily clarify how that percentage is allocated. A product named "Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1%" does not disclose whether the 1% refers to Copper Tripeptide-1 specifically or to a broader peptide complex. Without an explicit GHK-Cu concentration, the buyer cannot determine how much of the active is actually present.
Multi-peptide formulations are not inferior products: they pursue a different strategy, targeting multiple pathways simultaneously. But a product that does not disclose the individual concentration of each active cannot be evaluated against single-compound research, and should not be treated as equivalent to a serum that does.
GHK-Cu is water-soluble and stable in aqueous carriers. The solvents used alongside water matter for two reasons: skin compatibility and use context.
Glycol solvents, propylene glycol, propanediol, pentylene glycol, are common in cosmetic formulations. They are broadly considered safe and serve a legitimate function in many products. They also cause sensitivity reactions in a meaningful proportion of users, and are widely avoided in microneedling protocols specifically, because the micro-channels created during needling increase dermal absorption of everything applied immediately after, including potential irritants.
For a compound that is frequently used within scalp and skin protocols where microneedling is also employed, a glycol-free aqueous carrier built on glycerin and sodium hyaluronate is the simpler option for users prioritising microneedling compatibility. It is also the less convenient one to manufacture at scale, which is part of why it remains less common in the market.
UK cosmetic products must be notified on the UK Cosmetic Products Notification Portal (SCPN) before they can be placed on the UK market. Notification requires a complete Product Information File including a safety assessment by a qualified assessor. It is a regulatory minimum, not a quality endorsement, but it is a minimum that imported products sold informally through grey channels often do not meet.
For UK buyers, SCPN registration is a basic due diligence filter. A UK-formulated product from a UK brand, registered on the SCPN, has documented and traceable regulatory standing. A product that does not exist in the SCPN database, or that is being shipped from outside the UK without proper import declaration, does not.
Products meeting all five criteria are relatively uncommon, which is part of the reason the research-literate skincare and hair loss community finds this market difficult to navigate.
Against the five criteria: concentration is stated explicitly at 1%; Copper Tripeptide-1 appears third in the INCI list, after water and glycerin, before sodium hyaluronate and the preservative system; it is a standalone serum with a single primary active; the carrier is glycol-free; and it is UK-formulated and SCPN registered.

Why do some GHK-Cu serums say "1%" when the actual active concentration might be lower?
Copper peptides are available to formulators as pure powder and as pre-dissolved stock solutions of varying concentrations. A formulator adding a stock solution at 1% inclusion in the formula is not adding 1% pure Copper Tripeptide-1 by weight: the actual active concentration depends on the strength of the stock solution, which is not disclosed on the label. This means a "1% GHK-Cu" claim from one brand may not be equivalent to the same claim from another. The combination of a stated percentage and a stated mg/mL figure is the most unambiguous form of disclosure: 1% and 10mg/mL refer to the same concentration of pure active and together leave no room for interpretation.
Does INCI order tell you the exact concentration?
Not precisely, but it tells you enough. Above 1%, ingredients are listed by descending concentration. Below 1%, any order is permitted. If Copper Tripeptide-1 appears after ingredients typically used at trace levels, you can reasonably conclude it is present at a trace level too. You cannot determine the exact figure without a stated concentration, which is precisely why a brand stating it explicitly is the most direct signal of transparency.
Are multi-peptide serums with GHK-Cu worth using?
They are a different product for a different purpose. If you want broad peptide coverage across multiple pathways simultaneously, a multi-peptide blend is a reasonable approach. If you are specifically trying to replicate the conditions in GHK-Cu research, or you have already used multi-peptide products and want to isolate the copper peptide variable, a standalone 1% serum is the more direct route. The two are not mutually exclusive, but they should not be treated as equivalent.
Why does the carrier matter if the active is the same?
The carrier affects how the active is delivered, how the skin responds to the formula overall, and whether the product is compatible with other parts of the user's protocol. Glycol solvents are the variable most commonly relevant in this context: they serve a functional role in many formulations but introduce a compatibility issue for a subset of users, particularly those incorporating microneedling. For those users, the carrier is not a secondary consideration.
What does SCPN registration actually confirm?
SCPN registration confirms that the product has been notified to the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards for UK sale, and that a Product Information File including a safety assessment exists. It is not a quality endorsement. It confirms the product is being sold through a legitimate, documented channel and has met the minimum regulatory requirement for UK cosmetic sale. For products arriving via informal import or grey-market routes, this baseline is frequently absent.
