What is GHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu, INCI name Copper Tripeptide-1, is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide first isolated from human plasma in 1973. It's the most extensively researched copper peptide, with the largest evidence base for skin remodelling and wound healing. What is AHK-Cu?
AHK-Cu, INCI name Copper Tripeptide-3, is a synthetic copper-binding tripeptide explored more specifically in hair follicle research than GHK-Cu, with a much smaller published evidence base and no natural-decline story of its own.
Are GHK-Cu and copper peptides the same thing?
No. GHK-Cu is a copper peptide, but not all copper peptides are GHK-Cu. "Copper peptides" is a broad category that includes compounds like GHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-1) and AHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-3), each a different structure with its own evidence base rather than interchangeable versions of the same thing.
Why are copper peptides called peptides?
Because they're short chains of amino acids. GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu are both tripeptides, meaning each is built from three amino acids joined together, and that tripeptide structure is what binds a copper(II) ion to form the active copper-peptide complex.
What's the actual difference between GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu has the deeper, broader research base and is generally used for facial skin. AHK-Cu's research is narrower but more hair-specific, and it's generally used on the scalp. Can you use GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu together?
Yes. They're typically applied to different areas, GHK-Cu to face and skin, AHK-Cu to the scalp, and there's no known incompatibility between them.
What's the difference between Copper Tripeptide-1 and GHK-Cu?
None; they're the same compound. Copper Tripeptide-1 is the INCI (ingredient label) name for GHK-Cu, required by cosmetic regulation. A buyer scanning an ingredients list for "GHK-Cu" and not finding it may simply be looking for the wrong term.
What's the difference between Copper Tripeptide-3 and AHK-Cu?
Same situation as GHK-Cu: no difference, they're the same compound. Copper Tripeptide-3 is AHK-Cu's INCI name. It's a different compound from Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu), not an alternate name for it.
Why is GHK-Cu blue?
The blue-green colour comes from the copper(II) ion itself once it's bound (chelated) to the peptide; copper complexes of this kind commonly produce that colour range due to how the bound copper absorbs light. It's a visual indicator that copper is actually present and complexed, not a dye or additive.
What concentration should a GHK-Cu serum be?

What concentration should an AHK-Cu serum be?

Why does the 10mg/mL figure matter, not just the percentage?
Because it makes dosing arithmetic simple rather than something you have to work out. At 10mg/mL, every 0.1mL applied delivers exactly 1mg of active, so scaling a specific milligram amount up or down for a larger or smaller application is straightforward multiplication, not guesswork. A brand stating only "1%" without the mg/mL equivalent leaves that conversion to the buyer.
Is 1% actually the concentration used in the research?
Not directly for either compound. It's a transparent, checkable formulation figure, not a claim that it replicates any single study's dose. The underlying research for both compounds spans different model systems (cell culture, animal models, and for AHK-Cu, picomolar-to-nanomolar in vitro concentrations) that don't map cleanly onto a topical percentage.
Are copper peptides safe to use with microneedling?

Can GHK-Cu be used with vitamin C?
Not in the same application. Copper genuinely catalyses the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), a real and well-established reaction, so most people separate the two by time of day, vitamin C in the morning and GHK-Cu in the evening, rather than layering them together. Can GHK-Cu be used with retinol?
Most people can, typically by separating them across the day rather than applying both at once, GHK-Cu in the morning, retinol at night. The chemical-interaction concern circulated online has limited published evidence behind it; the more real consideration is tolerability, since both actives affect skin remodelling and using them together may simply be more than a given skin type needs at once. Does AHK-Cu leave a visible mark or residue on skin?
Not typically, at normal application amounts on intact skin; this is a different question from why the serum itself can discolour in the bottle over time (covered below), which is about product oxidation rather than skin. If a formulation has already oxidised significantly, that's more a sign of a stability or storage issue than something specific to AHK-Cu as a compound.
Can copper peptides be used alongside minoxidil?

Why do some copper peptide serums turn brown or discolour?
Copper catalyses oxidation of certain ingredients over time, which can cause visible colour change in the product. How do I know if a copper peptide serum actually contains a meaningful amount?
Check the INCI list position: above 1%, ingredients are listed by descending concentration, so Copper Tripeptide-1 or -3 appearing near the bottom of a long list is a red flag. Do copper peptides actually work?
GHK-Cu has one of the longest research histories of any cosmetic peptide, spanning more than fifty years across cell, animal, and human skin studies, as well as formal safety reviews. That's a substantially larger evidence base than most cosmetic actives, though it still falls short of large placebo-controlled cosmetic trials. Are copper peptides worth it?
That depends on what you're comparing them against. Against cosmetic actives with large published human trials, copper peptides' evidence base for cosmetic outcomes is thinner. Against ingredients with no meaningful published research behind them at all, it's considerably stronger. "Worth it" is ultimately a judgment call only you can make once you know what the evidence actually says, rather than something we can answer for you.
